Série: The Achilles in a Nutshell Series

The centaur Chiron teaches the young Achilles to shoot for the first time. Chiron was the tutor of many legendary heroes, including Heracles, who met the goddesses Pleasure and Virtue while traveling among shepherds. According to myth, Chiron accidentally wounded himself with a poison-tipped arrow—or, in another version, Heracles wounded him by mistake. Unable to heal, Chiron eventually renounced his immortality and requested from Hades to exchange his life for that of the Titan Prometheus.

Chiron appears in numerous ancient sculptures and paintings, often depicted as a wise, thoughtful elder. One of the most famous depictions is a mural from Herculaneum, dating to around the beginning of our era, showing Chiron teaching Achilles to play the lyre (now in the National Museum in Naples).
